Unconventional by Nature

Hawthorne Valley Association

Hawthorne Valley’s battery recycling box has gotten an upgrade! Those who have used the box to deposit your spent batteries may have noticed that it is no longer in its place near the Farm Store entrance. We have installed a more durable box at the corner of the Farm Store (just look for the bright green box!) to continue offering this service to our community in a more visible location.

We are grateful to Hawthorne Valley Waldorf School teacher Corinna Komenda, who spearheaded efforts to begin collecting batteries at Hawthorne Valley for recycling through the nonprofit Call2Recycle. Since January 2023, our community has recycled over 8 boxes of batteries!

  • Be sure to safely prep your batteries by either bagging each battery in its own clear plastic bag before placing it in a storage container OR taping the terminals with clear packing, non-conductive electrical or duct tape, keeping label visible.
  • Store batteries in a cool dry place until you can drop them in a recycling box.
  • Aim to drop batteries to recycle within six months, ensuring they are bagged or taped.

This effort is part of Hawthorne Valley’s efforts to become a Net Positive campus. To learn more, please contact Josh Wise, Campus Director.
