Hawthorne Valley Association

We are thrilled to announce that Evlyn Pilgrim, Class of 2025, and Benjamin Glatt, Class of 2010, will each receive this year's Henriette Reiss Award for Artistic Endeavor to further arts education and support the completion of a novel, respectively.

This award is given annually to current or former Hawthorne Valley Waldorf School (HVS) graduates to support artistic practice. The 31st annual Henriette Reiss Award will be presented at HVS’s 2025 Graduation Ceremony on Saturday, June 14 at 2pm under the School Pavilion. This event is open to the public.

About the Awardees

Evlyn Pilgrim plans to attend Hudson Valley Community College in September to study Construction Technologies. She is interested in exploring different forms of art with the goal of bringing movement and life into her creations. Right now, she is compelled by architecture and design, and plans to build her own tiny house as a model of small living spaces that are beautiful, practical, affordable, and healthy. This award will go towards furthering her education in the arts.

Benjamin Glatt is a writer and teacher currently living in Bracebridge, Ontario, Canada. He primarily writes Science Fiction and Fantasy, though he also enjoys writing the occasional poem, musical, lyric, or speech. He did most of his early creative work while he was meant to be paying attention to the real world and has rarely checked in since. He hopes it is doing ok. This award will support his ability to finish and publish his latest novel. Learn more about Ben’s work here.

About the Award

The Henriette Reiss Award was established in 1993 by Elizabeth Papas of Philmont, N.Y., a long-time friend of the Reiss family. Henriette Reiss (1889-1992), a resident of Columbia County, N.Y., for twenty-five years, was an internationally respected artist and designer. Born in England and raised in Switzerland, she followed her husband, the artist Winold Reiss, to New York in 1914, where she soon established her own career and became well known for her textile and rug designs, as well as for her book jackets and advertising layouts. She also taught at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. For further information on Henriette Reiss, click here.
