In addition to numerous meditations, visualizations and verses, Rudolf Steiner gave the six essential exercises. Although he mentioned them numerous times and in many contexts these exercises are often thought to be optional, while other meditations seem more attractive. But these exercises – control of thought, control of will, control of feeling, positivity, openness and harmonizing – are essential to any spiritual path and, although called by different names, can be found in many spiritual traditions.
By examining these exercises together in a group setting, and then practicing them as each individual sees fit, we can gain an understanding and experience of their value. In our modern culture the capacities that these exercises build can be helpful to anyone whether or not they choose a meditative path.
Once again this year we will be working with the exercises in a group setting. We will meet one Sunday evening at 5:30-6:45 pm each month. Each exercise will be presented by someone familiar with it and everyone will have a chance to share their process and questions. At each meeting we will practice one of the exercises together. We will introduce a new exercise each month but you are welcome to join at any time. The group is completely open – you can come to as many meetings as you wish and drop-ins are always welcome. We will meet at Free Columbia’s Space on Main, 84 Main Street in Philmont, NY (in the same building as the Family Dollar).
