Hawthorne Valley is pleased to congratulate board member Alfa Demmellash and her partner Alexander Forrester, co-founders of Rising Tide Capital, on receiving the 25th Heinz Award. The prestigious award was established in 1993 to honor the legacy of Senator John Heinz by recognizing outstanding individuals for their contributions in the areas of Arts and Humanities, Environment, Human Condition, Public Policy, and Technology, the Economy and Employment.
“Since I first met Alfa, I have been struck by her regenerative and compassionate approach to creating health, wealth, and wellbeing in the context of place and her dedication to addressing the wealth gap through community-minded programs,” says Martin Ping, Hawthorne Valley Executive Director. “The recognition Alfa, Alex, and Rising Tide Capital are getting with the Heinz Award is well-deserved, and I hope inspires others to follow their lead in supporting people to flourish in their places.”
Demmellash and Forrester founded Rising Tide Capital in 2004 to provide underserved entrepreneurs with the resources needed to grow successful businesses. Under their leadership for the past 16 years, Rising Tide Capital has run hundreds of Community Business Academies, which provide intensive business management training coupled with year-round coaching and mentorship to over 1,000 entrepreneurs annually. Corporate, foundation, and governmental funders underwrite the cost of tuition for all participants. By building successful businesses, these entrepreneurs meet their families’ basic needs, create opportunities for social mobility, and help transform their local communities into thriving economies.
