Dear Friends and Neighbors,

I sincerely hope this letter finds you and your loved ones safe and healthy as we collectively navigate the disruption, anxiety, and fallout of the coronavirus pandemic.  It is glaringly apparent that this crisis is affecting everyone, and that the resulting needs are vast. With that said, I am writing to make an appeal for your support for Hawthorne Valley AND for all of our faculty and staff who have been impacted by the COVID-19 crisis.

At this time of year, Hawthorne Valley is normally full of energy and excitement with the arrival Spring. The sounds of children engaged in immersive, hands-on learning on the Farm and at the School would resonate through field and forest in this season of rebirth. Today, however, it is unsettlingly quiet. State mandates to close schools and shelter in place have caused activities across our initiatives to be canceled or postponed indefinitely. At Hawthorne Valley Waldorf School, faculty have shifted exclusively to distance learning; and without visiting students, the Place Based Learning Center has suspended all of its programming until summer. In order to protect our farmers and artisanal food producers, we have had to make the difficult decision to temporarily restrict visitor access to our usually busy farm campus.

The loss of revenue has precipitated the need to enact cost reductions. Though we hope that these changes will be short-lived, we understand that our teachers, farmers, administrators, maintenance workers, and counselors, need help now in order to weather this storm. Likewise, Hawthorne Valley, too, needs critical support in order to remain whole, minimize further reductions, and ensure our future. Therefore, we ask that you please consider making a donation to Hawthorne Valley in any or all of the following ways.

Help Purchase a CSA Share
Hawthorne Valley is working to underwrite the cost of CSA shares to ensure that impacted co-worker families from across the Association will have access to fresh, healthy food all summer long.

Make a Pledge
In light of the US Government’s recent economic stimulus package, some of our dedicated donors and community members have pledged to contribute a portion of their forthcoming stimulus check to support Hawthorne Valley.

Support HVA
Please consider making a gift to the Hawthorne Valley Association General Support Fund to help ensure the future of all of our diverse programming.

It goes without saying that we are in a bewildering and unstable time. Though this crisis is separating us physically, in other ways it brings us together and reminds us every day that we do, in fact, need each other. Our true wealth resides in our relationships.

We thank you for your consideration, and wish you and your family well during these unsettled times.

In community,

Martin Ping
Hawthorne Valley Executive Director
