Irene Davis joined Hawthorne Valley’s Finance Office in 2008 with over 20 years’ experience in business and finance administration. In her position, Irene handles accounts receivable for Hawthorne Valley Waldorf School and other Hawthorne Valley initiatives and payroll for its 200 employees.

Irene grew up helping out at her family’s sport and bait shop in Wanaque, NJ. She planned to study computer programming in college, but due to an illness in her family, Irene took a job in the loan department at a bank to be close to home. That position led her to pursue a career in finance.

After leaving the bank, she took a position at the Russ Berrie & Co where she was trained in payroll.

“I love working with numbers because they have to add up,” she said. “And I really enjoy payroll. My supervisor at Russ Berrie used to say I was good at it because I don’t think of it as dollars but numbers. I always try to do each job to the best of my ability to help make everyone else’s jobs easier.”

Irene and her family came to the Hudson Valley in the ‘80s to be closer to her former husband’s family. During that time, Irene attended night school at Columbia Greene Community College to pursue a degree in accounting. She worked at two different local car dealerships in the area and came to Hawthorne Valley after one employer closed.

“The dealerships were very strict work environments,” she said. “So to come to Hawthorne Valley with its community and family-oriented mindset was very refreshing. We get the work done in a timely manner, of course, but mistakes are fixed without having to be reminded about it for six weeks and if you’re having a bad day, you can always walk around the farm to reorient yourself.”

In her spare time, Irene enjoys knitting, hiking, working out and exploring meditative practices, and spending time with her family and dogs. She is also researching her family’s genealogy and enjoying learning more about her history.
