John Darby brings his background in both academic administration and marketing to his new role as Hawthorne Valley Waldorf School’s (HVS) Admissions Director.

A Georgia native, Darby graduated from Emory University with a degree in English. As he looked at his post-college options, he was intrigued by the newly-launched Teach for America program. “I felt connected to their vision of one day every child in America having an equal opportunity for an excellent education,” he said.

Darby taught in the program for two years as a first and fourth grade teacher in New Orleans before moving into administrative work for the organization, including admissions. During that time, he also spent two years as a sixth grade teacher in Morocco at the American School of Tangier.

As part of his work at Teach for America, Darby was involved with the fledgling beginnings of their use of the internet as a marketing tool and saw it as a growing opportunity. He next took a role at Condé Nast where he could learn more about and develop his skills in digital marketing and magazine publication. Over the course of his career, Darby served as General Manager of, worked as the VP, Consumer Marketing at Hearst Publications, TheKnot, and StreetEasy (Zillow) in New York City.

After spending many years in the online publishing field in New York, Darby decided to move full time to Columbia County and seek a role that would combine his interests in marketing and education. Admissions was the perfect fit. He is looking forward to introducing parents and students to the School and guiding families through the application and admission process.

Darby says, “I’m incredibly excited about helping families discover the magic of Hawthorne Valley and the outstanding educational opportunity that the school offers.”

When Darby isn’t busy with his new role, he enjoys yoga and working on renovating his home in Hudson.
