My what big horns you have! 🐮 Did you know that My what big horns you have! 🐮 Did you know that cow horns have blood flow and are connected to the sinus system of a cow? This passageway allows for air to circulate through the bone. Horns can also help cows regulate their body temperature and improve digestive well-being. Thank you to Lappy for modeling for us and @brighidcaillean for the photo! #cowednesday

Can you discern the general branching patterns of different tree species? Can you see how each individual tree fills the sky in its own way, depending on its growth history and its neighbors? #farmscapeecology

Today is not just a day of remembrance, but a day to learn and act. The ongoing pursuit of justice, both in our country and politics as well as our local food systems and communities is ever-evolving and necessary work. Thank you to MLK for these reminders, and today we remember your humility and sacrifice in doing the good work.

Friends and patrons of Hawthorne Valley: One of th Friends and patrons of Hawthorne Valley: One of the Hawthorne Valley Farm Store staff members has tested positive for COVID-19. This individual is asymptomatic and has been quarantined since January 8th after they found out they were potentially exposed to the virus.

As they weren't showing any symptoms, the identified exposure window is the morning of Friday, January 8th. Extensive contact tracing is underway internally as well as with the Columbia County Department of Health. Individuals identified to have had close contact with the positive case are also getting tested and quarantining.

The store continues to be thoroughly cleaned and sanitized daily, as has been our protocol since the onset of the pandemic in March. Hawthorne Valley’s main priority is the health and safety of their team and the customers we serve. We have taken extraordinary steps to keep everyone as safe as possible. Rest assured that we are following and exceeding all the guidelines set by the CDC regarding COVID-19, which include regular sanitation of commonly used surfaces, a strict facial covering requirement throughout the building, and social distancing when possible. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
Since RG19 started nearly two years ago, it has be Since RG19 started nearly two years ago, it has been prioritizing the needs of community members who are experiencing food insecurity by offering fresh, quality, locally-grown, and organic foods through its tiered Fair Pricing System. The Fair Pricing System creates a middle ground between emergency food and full priced grocery stores - allowing more people to feed themselves with dignity by choosing the price they can afford. While RG19's Fair Pricing System does not replace the emergency food system, the COVID-19 Pandemic has underscored the crucial role that it can play in increasing food for vulnerable residents of the county, while also prioritizing local farms and producers 🛒🥬

In May of this year, RG19 rolled out a new, rural distribution program to better serve low-income households and community members at risk of food insecurity through Columbia County. Since then, nearly 400 rural distribution orders have been filled, 65% of which were purchased at the lowest-priced tier. While rural distribution began with door-to-door delivery, it has already expanded to include a curbside pick-up option in New Lebanon.

However, they do occasionally wake up to look for food, defecate, or if they sense danger. The Hawthorne Valley Farmscape Ecology Program recently found fresh bear tracks in the snow and set up a motion sensor video camera nearby. Here is what was recorded 🐻 #farmscapeecology
